As per the report from Europäische Sicherheit & Technik, Germany plans to replace the 18 Leopard 2A6 main battle tanks with the same number of Leopard 2A8 tanks rather than the previously proposed Leopard 2A7+ models for the Ukrainian army. Furthermore, Germany is contemplating placing a significant order for the Leopard 2A8 tanks from Krauss-Maffei Wegmann, which will feature an improved engine and active protection systems. The Leopard 2A8 tank is expected to act as a stepping stone towards a more advanced model and the initial shipment is expected around 2025.
The Leopard 2A8 tank will have a new armor package that will offer better resistance to mines and rocket-propelled grenades, and will also have upgraded situational awareness, communication, and fire control systems. The tank will be equipped with advanced spaced 3rd generation composite multi-layer armor made up of high-strength steel, tungsten, plastic filler, and ceramic components for unparalleled defense.
Incorporating Rafael Trophy Active Protection System (APS) inside the Leopard 2A8 tank will enhance its defensive capabilities. The tank will retain its existing 120mm L55 main armament, with a longer barrel for increased muzzle velocity, making it more efficient while firing the latest APFSDS-T rounds.
The Leopard 2A8 will feature a cooling system for the crew compartment in both its turret and chassis, as well as a higher-performance power generator for checkpoint operations. The tank will also have an external telephone for dismounted personnel, enhanced night vision for the driver, and better optronics for long-range reconnaissance. The Leopard 2A8’s digitized, multifunctional operator concept will simplify user interfaces and controls, while the built-in command and information system will provide real-time data and communication for better decision-making in the field. Finally, the Leopard 2A8 will be compatible with programmable detonation ammunition for greater flexibility and efficiency when engaging various targets.
In summary, the Leopard 2A8 tank will receive a range of innovative upgrades to significantly enhance its performance, reconnaissance capabilities, and crew comfort. These enhancements demonstrate that the Leopard 2 series will remain a top choice for modern armies due to its innovative design and reliable performance on the battlefield.
