The United States is developing the AGM-158D JASSM-XR air-to-surface missile, with Poland potentially becoming its inaugural foreign customer.
Here’s What We Understand Lockheed Martin is anticipated to deliver the novel missile to the US Department of Defense in the coming year.
Poland’s intentions to purchase the JASSM-XR were revealed by the nation’s defense minister, Mateusz Morawiecki, during a briefing with US Vice President Kamala Harris. Regrettably, there is limited information available about this promising missile.
Lockheed Martin has received a contract to devise a modification of the AGM-158 with an extreme range. The missile will weigh 2,300 kg, including the warhead (910 kg), and have a maximum launch range of approximately 1,900 km. Initially named JASSM-XR, the missile was later designated as AGM-158D.
It will be outfitted with a new control unit, altered wings, and a secure GPS receiver. Each missile will cost roughly $1.5 million. The US Department of Defense intends to place its initial order of JASSM-XR in January 2024, with the first batch comprising 40 missiles. F-16 Fighting Falcon and F-35 Lightning II fighters will carry the JASSM-XR.
