The United States is developing the AGM-158D JASSM-XR air-to-ground missile, with Poland potentially becoming its first foreign client.
Here’s What We Understand Lockheed Martin is anticipated to deliver the new missile to the US Department of Defense in the coming year. Poland’s intention to acquire the JASSM-XR was revealed by the nation’s defense minister, Mateusz Morawiecki, during a briefing with US Vice President Kamala Harris.
Regrettably, there is limited information available about the promising missile at this time. Lockheed Martin has secured a contract to create a modified version of the AGM-158 with an extreme range. The missile will have a weight of 2300 kg, including the warhead (910 kg). The maximum launch distance will be approximately 1900 km.
The initial missile was named JASSM-XR and later received the designation AGM-158D. It will feature a new control unit, redesigned wings, and a secure GPS receiver. The cost of a single missile is estimated to be around $1.5 million. The US Department of Defense intends to make its inaugural purchase of JASSM-XR in January 2024.
The first delivery will consist of 40 missiles. The JASSM-XR will be deployed by F-16 Fighting Falcon and F-35 Lightning II fighters.
