Referred to as 12 Squadron, the collaborative Typhoon squadron between the UK and Qatar initiated operations in June 2020. A contract was signed by the QEAF commander, Major General Jassim Al-Mannai, and the RAF deputy commander, Air Marshal Sir Richard Knighton, to prolong the joint Typhoon operations for the following two years.
Sealed at the UK Ministry of Defence, the agreement ensures the joint squadron’s continuity, enabling the pilots and ground crews of both nations to enhance their interoperability and further develop operational skills. Established at RAF Coningsby, 12 Squadron is the first joint squadron in the RAF since World War II, specifically dedicated to the joint UK-Qatar Typhoon squadron, and has been active since July 2018.
Since its inception in 2020, the bilateral squadron has facilitated combined training exercises for pilots and air crews from both air forces, taking advantage of state-of-the-art facilities. Expressing his satisfaction, Air Marshal Sir Richard Knighton stated, “I am pleased to witness the signing of this extension agreement. Qatar is a significant regional partner, and the Royal Air Force is committed to fostering this close collaboration for the mutual benefit of both air forces and nations.
This partnership plays a crucial role in promoting peace and stability in the region.” In October 2022, 12 Squadron was deployed to Qatar under ‘Project Thariyat,’ where it successfully supported the QEAF’s air security operations during the six-month mission.
Last week, 12 Squadron returned to the UK, marking the completion of the initial phase for the joint squadron. Throughout this phase, the squadron provided assistance for the QEAF’s inaugural Typhoon squadron formation and aircraft integration.
