Recognized as 12 Squadron, the collaborative UK-Qatar Typhoon squadron initiated operations in June 2020. The Royal Air Force of the UK and the Qatar Emiri Air Force (QEAF) have agreed to prolong the joint Typhoon operations for the following two years. The agreement was signed by Major General Jassim Al-Mannai, the QEAF commander, and Air Marshal Sir Richard Knighton, the RAF deputy commander capability.
Executed at the UK Ministry of Defence, the agreement ensures the continuation of the joint squadron, providing an opportunity for pilots and ground crews from both nations to enhance interoperability and further develop their operational skills. Designated as 12 Squadron, the joint UK-Qatar Typhoon squadron, stationed at RAF Coningsby, was established in July 2018, marking the first joint squadron in the RAF since World War II.
Since its inception in 2020, the bilateral squadron has facilitated joint operations, enabling pilots and air crews from both air forces to train collectively using advanced facilities. Sir Richard Knighton expressed his delight at the signing of the extension agreement, emphasizing the significance of Qatar as a regional partner. He also conveyed the Royal Air Force’s eagerness to continue cultivating this close partnership for the benefit of both air forces and nations.
He stated, “This partnership plays a crucial role in promoting peace and stability in the region.” In October 2022, 12 Squadron embarked on ‘Project Thariyat’ in Qatar, successfully completing a six-month deployment to support QEAF’s air security operations.
Last week, 12 Squadron returned to the UK, marking the completion of the initial phase of the joint squadron. During this phase, the squadron provided support for the establishment of QEAF’s first Typhoon squadron and the integration of aircraft.
