Known as Squadron 12, the joint UK-Qatar Typhoon squadron initiated operations in June 2020. The UK Royal Air Force and Qatar Emiri Air Force (QEAF) have entered into an agreement to prolong the joint Typhoon operations for the next two years. The agreement was signed by Major General Jassim Al-Mannai, QEAF Commander, and Air Marshal Sir Richard Knighton, RAF Deputy Commander Capability.
Executed at the UK Ministry of Defence, the agreement will enable the joint squadron to continue facilitating collaboration between the nations’ pilots and ground crews, enhancing interoperability and operational skills. Referred to as Squadron 12, the joint UK-Qatar Typhoon squadron, stationed at RAF Coningsby, was established in July 2018. It represents the first combined squadron in the RAF since World War II.
Since commencing joint operations in 2020, the bilateral squadron has provided an opportunity for pilots and air crews from both air forces to train together utilizing advanced facilities. Sir Richard Knighton expressed his satisfaction, stating, “I am pleased that this extension agreement has been signed. Qatar is a significant regional partner, and the Royal Air Force is committed to nurturing this close partnership for the benefit of both Air Forces and nations.” He added, “This partnership plays a crucial role in promoting peace and stability in the region.” In October 2022, Squadron 12 was deployed on ‘Project Thariyat’ to Qatar, successfully completing a six-month mission supporting the QEAF’s air security operations.
The squadron recently returned to the UK, marking the conclusion of the initial phase of the joint squadron.
Throughout this phase, the squadron provided support for the formation of the QEAF’s first Typhoon squadron and integration of the aircraft.
