Embraer announced today, during LAAD Defence & Security 2023, the introduction of the A-29N Super Tucano aircraft, a light attack aircraft, armed reconnaissance, and advanced training platform, in the NATO configuration, initially aimed at meeting the requirements of European nations. The enhanced A-29N version will incorporate equipment and functionalities to meet the operational needs of NATO, including a new datalink and single-pilot operation. These enhancements will expand the aircraft’s capabilities, enabling its utilization in JTAC training missions, for instance. Training systems will also be upgraded to adhere to the most rigorous global standards, incorporating virtual, augmented, and mixed reality technologies.
With a global delivery count surpassing 260 units, the A-29 Super Tucano has been selected by over 15 air forces worldwide, including the United States Air Force (USAF). Designed as a highly versatile aircraft, the A-29 Super Tucano excels in a wide range of missions, including light attack, aerial surveillance, interception, and counterinsurgency. The A-29’s ruggedness and adaptability allow it to operate from remote and unpaved runways, even in austere environments, with minimal logistical support, all while maintaining low operating costs and high availability (above 90%).
Bosco da Costa Junior, President and CEO of Embraer Defense and Security, stated, “This marks a new chapter in the operational lifespan of the A-29 Super Tucano. We currently see numerous potential applications for the A-29N. Several European countries have expressed interest in specific capabilities that we have incorporated into this version.”
In addition to its combat roles, the aircraft serves as an advanced training platform. Its capacity to simulate combat missions and record flight data makes it an exceptionally effective training tool. As a true multi-mission aircraft, the A-29 provides air forces with a single platform for light attack, armed reconnaissance, close air support, and advanced training, thereby optimizing their fleets. It is equipped with state-of-the-art sensors and weapons, including an electro-optical/infrared system with a laser designator, night vision goggles, secure voice communications, and a data-link package. Consequently, the A-29 Super Tucano sets the standard in its domain, combining outstanding aircraft performance with modern weaponry, integrated sensors, and surveillance systems to establish a highly influential air power capability.
