One more European nation has made the decision to procure advanced F-35 Lightning II fighters from US-based defense contractor Lockheed Martin.
Here’s What We Know The country in question is Romania, as confirmed by the Supreme National Security Council’s announcement on April 11. The contract is expected to be signed within this year, although the specific quantity and number of planes have not been disclosed by Romania yet.
Assuming everything progresses as planned, the delivery of the fighters may commence after 2030. It’s worth noting that Romania currently operates 17 F-16 fighters, with an additional 32 F-16s set to be acquired from Norway in the near future for 388,000,000 euros.
The F-35 Lightning II is regarded as the most advanced mass-produced fighter aircraft, boasting a service life ranging from 30 to 40 years. Manufactured by American company Lockheed Martin, this fighter incorporates stealth technology and is equipped with two air-to-air missiles, guided bombs, and a 25mm cannon.
The F-35 Lightning II can cover distances of up to 2,200km and reach speeds of up to 1,931km/h.
